Longlevens celebrate last season’s Papa John’s Community Cup Counties 1 South Plate final win Longlevens celebrate last season’s Papa John’s Community Cup Counties 1 South Plate final win

Longlevens head to Twickenham on Saturday for an eagerly-awaited showpiece Papa John’s Community Cup final.

They take on Widnes in the Counties 1 Championship final after booking their place with 56-40 win against visiting KCS Old Boys at the weekend.

And they’ll certainly feel at home once they get to Twickenham because six or seven of their current squad were involved when Longlevens last played at the home of English rugby.

That was in May 2014 and a very special day it was too in the club’s 70-year history because they defeated Rugby Lions 23-12 in the RFU Junior Vase.

“Last Saturday was exactly 10 years to the day that we beat Rugby Lions,” said club secretary Mark Dunford. “It was Sunday 4th May 2014.”

Longlevens would love another win at Twickenham, of course, and they know what is required to win a Papa John’s Community Cup because last season they beat Twickenham 24-11 in the final of the Counties 1 South Plate final at the StoneX Stadium.

“Absolutely, we want to win,” said Dunford, a former player for the club. “It will be another very special day for the club and we intend to make it a big day.

“I think we’ve got a very good chance, this team is one of the best we’ve ever had.

“It’s very exciting times, there’s lots to play for.”

Longlevens have enjoyed another fine season, winning promotion from Counties 1 Western North.

The RFU have yet to determine which division they will be playing in next season – they are hoping to play in Regional 2 Severn – but wherever they are playing the foundations on which their success has been built will remain the same.

“Eighteen of the 22-man squad who played on Saturday came through the club’s juniors,” said Dunford.

“A few weeks ago both the 1sts and 2nds were playing and 32 of the 36 players were former juniors.

“It’s great testament to our commitment to junior rugby.”

The game against Widnes kicks off at 1pm  and Dunford added: “We’ve got as many as 200 people wanting to go and support the team.

“This is a proper game, this is the highest level at the level we play.”

And while Longlevens have had a very good season, so too have Widnes.

They won Counties 1 adm Lancashire & Cheshire after winning 20 of their 22 games – amassing 95 points along the way – and they earned their place at Twickenham by beating visitors Wanstead 32-25 at the weekend.
