There are not many people who have not heard of Lourdes in south west France. If for nothing else it is well known for being the most visited pilgrimage shrine in Christian Europe, however, this area has another claim to fame.

Travel approximately one hour by rail from Lourdes to the spa town of Bagneres de Bidnorre and you will be in the home region of Tissu des Pyreneees – “fabric of the Pyrenees”.

Knitted woollen capes from the spa town were popular as far back as Roman times. Graduating from cottage industries of hand knitted garments necessary for the very cold winters, in the 19th century weaving was introduced and production progressed to small factories in the region.

The production of the fabric has evolved too with the quality now being softer and silkier whilst retaining its wonderful warmth. Some wool fabrics are a combination of wool and mohair thus adding extra luxury to it. A perfect way to bring these gorgeous garments to the modern day.

The fabrics, from humble beginnings, are now produced in a variety of colours and patterns – ideal for creating long lasting warm, quality capes, ponchos, blankets and dressing gowns which are now exported all over the world.

You can get your hands on one of these beautiful and luxurious pieces of clothing at UK supplier Joyce Brooks lingerie based in Cheltenham. Their number is 01242 524706.
