SS17’s Showstoppers

Out with the old and in with the new. Isn’t that how the saying goes? The New Year is the best time to experiment with the latest beauty rules and kiss goodbye to 2016 trends. So let’s cut to the chase. What is the showstopper that will have us emerging from the misty grey of winter and force us to embrace what spring has in store? Colour, ladies and gentlemen.

Paving the way for a bright 2017
You heard right. Expect rainbow bright pinks and reds from the likes of Valentino, Dior, Miu Miu and, of course, thanks to it’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele, the king of colour – Gucci. The top designers are paving the way for a bright 2017 and welcome the return of the 1980s cocktail wear. This can only prove an exciting prospect for those of us who missed the Dynasty era the first time around. As we know, hundreds of beauty products and treatments launch every year and 2017 will be no different.

Taking it straight back to the eighties, one of the most experimental of all the eras, can only be a great excuse for some play time with your make up bag. From subtle interpretations to all-out retro throwbacks, the eighties have certainly made a stamp on SS17 beauty. Marc Jacobs’ entire show was inspired by the eighties rave culture – from a statement metallic eye to the more controversial coloured dreadlock, it’s time to dig out your crimpers (yes, we all had them!) and invest in the brightest shades you can find!

Acid-orange, aquamarine and glossy purple palettes
Gucci didn’t disappoint and went as far as showcasing yellow, lilac, peach and white eyebrows. The catwalk was alive with acid-orange lips, aquamarine and glossy purple palettes with colour painted onto the models’ temples rather than the eyes at Max Mara. Unexpected colour? You can say that again. With its inescapable presence on the catwalks, it was hard to miss, but perhaps not where you might have expected to see it.

Now, gentlemen don’t be alarmed! Be bold and embrace this turn in the tide. Men tend to shy away from colour for fear of looking like someone who just walked off the set of Sesame Street. Exploring spring’s rich colour palette can only be fun! For a less feminine take on the rainbow palette, look to saturated, deeper colours like soft rustics, instead of summers pops.

Be bold, daring and bright
You can choose your colours from pretty much any beauty brand this year, but a beauty baron known for their love of colour is Mac. They have an array of flash mob pouts ready and waiting for you to purchase. Viva Glam Lipstick (featured) in their collaboration with pop star Ariana Grande is a burst of colour, ideal for creating this look. Head to Topshop and get familiar with the range of palettes they have to suit your complexion. The high street retailer offers a variety of shades in this season’s pop colours.

Think back to your younger years when you were raiding your mum or sister’s make up bag – remember having fun recreating their looks? Then you’re going to love making your own stamp on this trend… Be bold, be daring, but above all, be bright!
