’Tis the season for glitz and glam

The holiday season is now in full swing and if there is one time of the year to add some glitz to your cosmetic regime, now is the time. Parties and the holidays should be exciting – a chance to be a little more daring than the rest of the year. Fashion is awash with glitter at the moment, as are the cosmetics on offer, so be daring and have fun this festive season!

Primer
Apply a light amount of primer onto well moisturised skin and give it a little time to fully absorb. Primer helps to keep your foundation in place and gives a lasting flawless finish – it is often described as similar to filling in the cracks before you paint your walls! With all the selfies and pictures we take, especially party shots, a good primer is a wise investment and you don’t need very much for it to be effective.

Foundation
Next step after your primer, it is essential to create a smooth canvas to apply the rest of your makeup. I think you need to shop around and experiment to find the perfect foundation that works on your particular skin type. Your skin changes throughout the year colour-wise – so should your foundation.

Never hesitate to ask at a beauty counter for a sample you can try at home. The lights in most department shops where we buy our foundations are very different from every day lighting. I am sure many of us have a drawer full of foundations that looked great in the store and not so great when we got them home. Most cosmetic firms want you to be a repeat customer, so try before you buy!

Blush
I recommend a cream blush, as it is less ageing and you can build on the colour. Personally, I apply on the apples of the cheek. There are huge varieties out there, many of which are used for definition, so if that is what you want to achieve, a darker shade will always slim the chosen area down. A good idea is on a quiet day at home try different application methods so you are sure of what works for you for the big occasion.

Powder
More is less here as once again it can sit in cracks and be very ageing. Bare Minerals has a nice light mineral veil that can be applied over foundation, or even under. It is useful as you can apply as a quick cover up if you do not want a full face of make-up. It’s also nice to know it does not contain all the usual talc and chemicals.

Eyes
This is where you can really go to town with a glittery eyelid, a great eyeliner and lashings of mascara. Add a little shimmer to the brow bone for a glossy finish, and a waterproof mascara will last and tend not to smudge. If you want a really drop-dead look, add some false eye lashes. Some even have a little diamante added to each lash; you will certainly stand out from the crowd.

Lipstick
Well it is the holidays so now is the time for bold and bright. Red is the colour of the season in fashion so why not try a racy red lipstick. A little powder around the lip line will keep it in place, and then outline your lips with a lip pencil – not too dark as when the lipstick wears off you do not want to be left with a harsh line. A smudge of gloss and I think you will be good to go.

Happy Holidays!
