A catalyst of inspiration

London fashion week (LFW) returned once more in the final week of September showcasing all the latest trends for womenswear spring/summer 2016 (SS16). Take everything with a pinch of salt – the designs you see on the catwalk are used as a catalyst of inspiration for high street designers.

Ruffles created in voluminous shape were popular amongst the catwalk. A feminine look created in soft netting, floral and tulle fabrics – perfectly light and airy for summer days. Have a look at designers Peter Pilotto, Molly Goddard and Simone Rocha for a range of ways this up and coming trend has been utilised for SS16.

We automatically envisage bright, playful colours on the SS16 catwalks. Erdem celebrated its 10th birthday by mixing things up when they presented a more sinister look for next season, with the signature floral embroidered chiffon dresses in dark autumnal tones accessorised with black neck ties.

The embroidered bomber, showcased by Alasdhair Willis, is definitely a piece for your SS16 wardrobe. Easy wearing and light, it can be worn with anything from jeans and a tee to a cute dress. It is a practical and transferable piece from catwalk to high street.

Green has been trending
Other trends to look out for next spring include the cocktail hour come 80s power dressing – see Topshop’s Unique collection. Buttercup yellow, meadow prints and ‘under the sea’ with pearl embellished shoes, embroidered shells, sailors and mermaids plus plenty of stripes and straps made of rope.

London Collections: Men spring/summer 2016 (LC:M SS16) held earlier in the year also gave us a good incite on what we expect to see next season.

Green has been trending a while now and will continue to do so into the summer months so be sure to inject some into your SS16 wardrobe, if not sooner. With designer Astrid Andersen incorporating a luminous green into his sportswear collection, Craig ‘Green’ follows with emerald tones and Oliver Spencer with a rich forest shade.

Suede was another key trend on the catwalks of LC:M, mainly in the form of a jacket. This will be a great transitional piece – they come in various colours, be it your traditional browns and tan, or something bolder with a blood red. Styles varied too from bomber jackets to anoraks. Wear with a patterned shirt or striped tee.

Top pockets were also a trending detail at London Collections: Men. Oversized and placed on the outside of jackets, this small garment design is both functional and on trend.
