Deck the halls, put the star on top of your tree and toss another log on the fire – coat season is here. Warmth is on this season’s wish list and with four major players in the patterns and prints game, it’s time to choose the one that’ll be keeping you toasty, and trendy, this Christmas. Watch out, winter is coming…

One of the biggest and boldest prints of the season

First up, be pretty in punk with an old era favourite and wear tartan. Championed by the Queen of the tartan trend, Vivienne Westwood, back in the mid-seventies when the media dubbed her fashion ‘punk rock’, it’s reformed and back to its best. Tartan is shaping up to be one of the biggest and boldest prints of the season and thanks to savvy street-stylers on social media, there are plenty of ways to style your own. Tartan is bold, striking and has a presence that can be polished for a more formal event or rocking the casual chic, just like the ‘Knightsbridge’ coat from Holland Cooper’s collection (see insert). As many high street stores replicate this more pricey piece, it’s a style which remains a go-to number for every occasion. The time has come, time to tartan!

Next up is the puffa. That’s right, the warmest of them all and it still makes its own style statement. The puffa is perfect for practicality and for AW17 it’s making its sleekest and most refined comeback to date. Whether you’re partial to the silkier, sexy number or are a wax weatherproof wearer, you don’t have to compromise on substance or style. The ‘Newmarket Dry Wax’ jacket by Hicks and Brown (see insert) is a must-have for your wardrobe update this December, so pick your perfect puffa and zip up!

Outrageously huggable outerwear

Fashion fluff is a firm favourite amongst British designers and this season is its time to shine. No longer known as a ‘honey monster’, you can’t walk through a crowd at fashion week without brushing shoulders with furry designs. Now everyone from the likes of Versace and Mary Katrantzou are creating OTT, oversized and outrageously huggable outerwear. Check out pieces from fashion fuzz favourite Charlotte Simone (see inset), the self-proclaimed ‘twenty-something trendsetter’ whose signature furry hoods and neon popsicle scarves have been parading up and down pavements since 2011 and spotted on the likes of Olivia Palermo, Poppy Delevingne and Alexa Chung. Who says fluff isn’t fashionable?

The most timeless motif trend you can buy into

Last but by no means least, and a personal preference of mine, is the classic leopard print. A print that’s been on-trend pretty much every season and will continue to be reinvented and recycled for years to come. Pioneered by Kate Moss, fashion’s obsession with the big cat love shows no signs of fading. It might be predictable, but it’s easily the most timeless motif trend you can buy into. Purchasing a leopard print piece really is an investment. Yes, really. Thanks to its neutral tones, which go with everything, this print tends to compliment fellow staples. Don’t overdo it and outshine your leopard with anything too busy, and stick to pairing it with your preferred style of jean, slogan tees and bold roll neck sweaters. You can find your own at practically any high street store, as this popular print won’t be on the ‘last chance to buy’ rail anytime soon. Show your big cat love by going big with your print.

Restore your nine-to-five with these AW17 power pieces this season and make sure you’re the one taking note; it’s all about the Christmas coat.
