It’s not long now until the start of the new bowls season at Overbury Bowling Club with the green being officially opened for the new season by the club president Penelope Bossom, of the Overbury Estate, on 15th April.

And that marks the start of a busy, busy time for the go-ahead club with the club holding an Open Day a week later.

The fun starts at 2pm on 22nd April with potential players invited along to try the sport with the help of one of the club’s coaches.

“To ‘give it a go’, come along on the day when we will be pleased to meet you and will provide you with everything necessary to try out bowls,” said club official Mike Mace.

And anyone who decides Overbury Bowling Club is the place for them, they won’t have too many gaps in their diary this summer.

“Every Monday evening during the season is club night where members can practice, receive coaching, play friendly matches and/or just socialise at the club or in the licensed bar,” explained Mace.

“Wednesday mornings are allocated for club members to play friendly matches and to get to know the other members. Whenever the green is not allocated to maintenance, matches or club activities, it is available for members to use for practice or to receive organised coaching.

“As well as playing bowls, Overbury Bowling Club has an active social side which includes skittles evenings, whist drives and fun days.”

And that’s not all at a club which also had a ‘have a go’ stand at the Winchcombe Country Show in 2017.

“In addition to many mixed and seniors matches played against Gloucestershire clubs, we have teams which compete in the Worcestershire Concorde League, the South Worcestershire Triples League and also in County leagues,” said Mace.

“After finishing in second place in the triples league last year, we are campaigning for the top spot this year and likewise, after reaching the quarter and semi-finals in some of the county leagues, we are aiming to go further in 2018.”

The club boast a six-rink county standard green, situated right on the border of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire on the Overbury Estate.

And if you think bowls at Overbury is just a summer sport you’d be wrong, because Overbury fielded five teams in the indoor leagues at Littleton during the winter.
