The new 2018 outdoor season has got off to a flying start at Overbury Bowling Club.

The green opened on 15th April and one week later the club held an Open Day where 18 new people attended to try their hand at lawn bowls.

Having enjoyed their taster session, many have now returned for more coaching and have taken up membership of the club.

Furthermore, after trying bowls on the club’s stall at the Winchcombe Show last August, a number of people have returned and joined the club this year.

With the show visitors enjoying the experience of bowling on the have-a-go stall, Overbury Bowling Club will run another one at this year’s show on August Bank Holiday Monday.

In the South Worcestershire Triples League, Overbury got off to the perfect start with their A team chalking up a convincing victory over Evesham B.

In weather conditions that felt closer to November than May, the first half of the match was very closely fought, neither side being able to gain the upper hand. The balance eventually swung in Overbury’s favour and a number of high scoring ends put the result beyond doubt.

The trio of Mike Ames, Mike Mace and Bruce Hayward rammed home their advantage in style, scoring 13 shots in the last three ends, and that of Albert England, Phil Harrison and Dan Mason pulled off a six on their final end.

The overall score of 86-28 makes a very promising start to the season which will see Overbury attempt to go one better than the second place they achieved in the previous two years.

The B team ran Evesham A very close but the final result did not go in Overbury’s favour. The triple of Dave Jones, Pete Jones and Chris Carter, having led briefly, went into their last end four behind and managed to score four to achieve a draw.

The team of Tim Morgan, Maurice Megginson and Roger Hewitt also briefly held the lead but went into their last end requiring three for another draw but unfortunately fell just short with a two.
