Joe Durie leads the charge for Gloucestershire’s youngsters
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Saturday, 9th June 2018, 09:00
Gloucestershire’s Under-14 Development side made it two wins from two after beating a Berkshire u14/15 XI in a closely fought game at Hungerford CC.
Having won the toss, Gloucestershire captain Joe Durie (Old Bristolians Westbury) elected to bat and together with Danny Poole (Lansdown) they added 75 for no loss off 17 overs before Poole fell to a smart catch at square leg.
Durie powered on making 74 as Gloucestershire posted a total of 176-7 in 40 overs. In reply, Berkshire came out firing taking 20 off the first two overs.
However, once opening bowlers Ben Adams (Lansdown) and Ed Dryall (Downend) found their lengths the scoring slowed.
They were given terrific support by left-arm seamer Sam Taylor (Carsons & Mangotsfield) who produced miserly figures of 8 overs, 3 for 12 to reduce Berkshire to 131-7 with five overs to go.
The home side fought back but were undone by sharp work from George Driver-Dickson (Frampton-on-Severn) behind the stumps who produced three run outs and a stumping – including a dismissal from the last ball of the game – as Gloucestershire ran out winners by nine runs.
Gloucestershire’s Under-15 Girls Development suffered a 72-run defeat to Worcestershire’s Development side in a rain affected encounter.
With the match reduced to a T20, Worcestershire batted first and made 132-4. Lucia Carini-Roberts (Aston Ingham) took 2-13 and Anabella Phipps (Dumbleton) picked up 1-8.
In response Gloucestershire lost wickets fell at regular intervals until the 11th over, when Carini-Roberts (25 not out) and Phipps (3) came together to add 18 off 25 balls.
The partnership was broken when Phipps was run out with the score on 35-6 off 15 overs.
Carini-Roberts continued to bat sensibly, guarding against the good balls and punishing the bad, finishing 25 not out off 33 balls with three fours. Gloucestershire eventually closed on 60-9 off 20 overs
Cheltenham and Cotswolds Under-13s picked up their first win of the district season with an eight-wicket victory over Gloucester and the Forest of Dean.
Having won the toss and asked GFOD to bat, C&C bowled their opponents out for 88 in 33 overs.
Archie Bailey (Dumbleton) took 3-10 while Lechlade’s Luke Joy picked up 2-14. For GFOD, opener Kameel Sahabadeen (Chepstow) was one of only three players to make double figures as he top scored with 28.
In reply C&C chased down their target in 16 overs for the loss of two wickets
Charlie Watkins (Charlton Kings) made an unbeaten 52 as Cheltenham and Cotswolds Under-12s dominated a drawn match with Bristol.
C&C posted 152-3 from their 30 overs but were unable to take the final wicket that would have sealed an outright win as Bristol clung on to finish on 101-9.
Oli Stanley (Slaughters) impressed with a knock of 39 and Daniel Hammond (Dumbleton) enjoyed a good all-round game scoring 19 not out off 15 balls before taking 3-7 in four overs.
In the other U12 district match Stroud and South Gloucestershire beat Gloucester and the Forest of Dean after chasing down their target of 89 for the loss of five wickets.
Cheltenham & Cotswolds Under-11s cruised to an eight-wicket win over Gloucester and the Forest of Dean after reaching their 105 run target with 13.2 overs to spare.
Opener Joe Winder (Lower Slaughter) carried his bat to finish on 34 not out and he was well supported by Tom Stanley (Slaughters) who made an unbeaten 27.
Earlier GFOD skipper Ben Lord (32) (Dumbleton) topscored for his team as they made 104. Alec McCombie (Cheltenham) was the pick of the bowlers, removing Lord and the rest of the GFOD top four on his way to figures of 4-17.Other Images
