The Cheltenham Festival starts today The Cheltenham Festival starts today

Gloucestershire go into this year’s Cheltenham Cricket Festival in good spirits when it comes to the shortest version of the game.

Back-to-back T20 Blast victories over Somerset and Kent following their win the previous weekend against Middlesex leave them handily placed at the top of their T20 group, tied on six points from four games with Sussex and Kent.

They have two T20 games at Cheltenham – against Essex on Friday and Glamorgan a week later – and after that there are still another eight fixtures before the quarter-finals take place from 23rd to 26th August.

The top four teams from the two groups qualify for the last eight, with finals day at Edgbaston on Saturday 15th September.

More immediately Gloucestershire look to improve their position in the county championship – they prop up the 10-strong Division Two – when they play Sussex in a four-day game starting today.

They play a second four-day game at Cheltenham against Durham, a game that starts on Sunday.

It’s a busy Festival because the women’s team – Western Storm – play a Kia Super League game against Surrey Stars on Thursday 26th July. The 20-over-a-side game starts at 2.30pm.

Meanwhile the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s big day – former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Andy Brassington is a big driving force behind the event – takes place tomorrow.

Among the top names from yesteryear due to be at Cheltenham are Gloucestershire great Mike Procter, former England fast bowler John Snow, ex-England chairman of selectors and one-time off-spinner Geoff Miller and ex-West Indies pace bowler Vanburn Holder.

They will be swapping stories from days gone by in one of the marquees with other guests including Tony Brown, Trevor Jesty, Roger Knight, Tim Lamb, Peter Lee, Matt Maynard, Pat Pocock, Clive Radley, David Steele, Andy Stovold and Bob Taylor.
