Scott Griffin Scott Griffin

Name: Scott Griffin

Date of birth: 20th June 1979

Birthplace: Hannover

Schools: Central Technology College (Gloucester) and Cirencester College/Football Academy

Occupation: Office manager/football secretary at Cirencester Town FC

Where you live: Gloucester

Your sport: Football

Your position: Back in the day I was a centre-forward

Clubs: Cirencester Town, Newport County, Salisbury City, Cinderford Town and Gloucester City to name a few!

Best achievement/result and why: Winning the play-offs for Cirencester Town back in 2010 to get into the Premier Division of the Southern League. We beat Bridgwater Town 4-3 in the final and nobody fancied us to win after we finished nearly 30 points behind the league winners!

Style of play: Goalscorer and skilful

Best team-mate you played with and why: I don’t think I could pick one individual as there have been so many good players in the same team as me. Gareth Hopkins, Michael Jackson, Wayne Turk, Kev Sawyer, James Mortimer-Jones are just a few that stand out of a huge list.

Best opponent and why: I’ve been kicked from pillar to post over the years by many centre-backs but one player that always shone out head and shoulders above everyone each time we played against him was Gethin Jones, who actually now plays for Cirencester Town FC currently. Over the years, I played against him when he was at Merthyr Town and Bath City and very rarely got the better of him. A strong pacey centre-back who is great in the air.

Best manager/coach you played for and why: For me this would be Ray Baverstock. When I started out as a youngster, he knew how to get the best out of the players and instilled a great team spirit into a team of 18-year-olds competing in men’s football at Southern league level - not an easy task when so many of the opposition players were experienced professionals that had dropped into non-league football and even a few ex-England internationals were playing at the time!

Best thing and worst thing about your sport today: Worst thing is the excuses for missing training or games. There seems to be a lack of commitment among players in this day and age - players will miss training or games for any reason.

Best thing is the quality of pitches has improved the standard of play and there are no longer the battles on boggy pitches. Instead you get to see good passing football... most of the time!

What is your involvement in sport today? I am currently the office manager and football secretary for Cirencester Town FC which involves everything from organising conferences, weddings, parties, to the football side which consists of getting sponsorship, ensuring that every player is registered and eligible to play football among many other things.

What do you think you will be doing sporting wise in five years’ time? I would like to think that I will still be involved in the football world somehow but ultimately, I will be spending a lot more time on the golf course I think!
