Fears that the Cheltenham Football League may be forced to fold have all but disappeared.

There was real concern among the league’s top brass that if they couldn’t find someone to replace outgoing treasurer Matt Neave they would have to blow the final whistle on a league that was established in 1900.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man.

League secretary Ian Hamilton was delighted to be able to tell The Local Answer that the situation appears to have been resolved.

“The position in terms of the treasurer is that Iain Smith is going to attend our remaining meetings until the end of the season as an observer/guest,” Hamilton explained.

“The position is then up for election at our AGM in June. All is looking good though with Iain and he appears eminently suitable and keen.”

Smith, a sports enthusiast, has a background in finance and in his younger days played both football and cricket.

Speaking to The Local Answer last month, Hamilton made it clear how important it was to find a new treasurer.

“Without a treasurer the league can’t function,” he said. “We can’t work without someone managing the funding.

“If no one comes forward, the league will have to fold. And yes, I am very worried.”

Neave has been treasurer for the past nine years but the pressure of his everyday work has persuaded him to stand down.
