One of Cheltenham’s favourite sons is coming home.

Michael Duff has been appointed the new manager of Cheltenham Town following the sacking of Gary Johnson last month and will take charge of his first game on Saturday when Cheltenham host Crewe in a League Two clash.

Cheltenham fans of a certain age will remember Duff’s playing days at the club in the mid-90s and early noughties – a period when the club enjoyed great success.

After establishing himself as a right-back he moved to the centre of defence before moving north in 2004 to join Burnley where he has been ever since, most recently on the coaching staff.

The now 40-year-old enjoyed a stellar playing career, winning the FA Trophy with Cheltenham at Wembley in 1998, winning promotion to the Football League the following year and then enjoying another promotion via the play-offs three years later.

That success came while Steve Cotterill was manager and it was Cotterill who took Duff to Burnley in the mid-noughties. And Duff continued to enjoy plenty of good times in the north west where he was an important part of three squads that won promotion to the Premier League.

After hanging up his boots in 2016 – he played 300 games for Cheltenham and close on 350 for Burnley – he joined the coaching staff at Burnley and most recently was coach of the club’s under-23s.

He takes charge of a Cheltenham team that are 18th in League Two, having won two and drawn one of their seven games.

Their second win came three days ago with a 3-1 win at Northampton under caretaker-boss Russell Milton, who played alongside Duff in those glory years in the late 90s and early noughties.
