Jean West has certainly kept herself busy since retiring 10 years ago.

The now 72-year-old took up golf in 2009 and it’s fair to say that she has never regretted it for a minute.

“I started playing as a novice at Brickhampton Court,” she said. “I played on the nine-hole course for two years and it’s gone on from there.”

It certainly has because Jean was lady captain in 2017 and is now on the social events committee.

So why did Jean get involved in golf?

“It was part of my retirement plan,” she said. “I wanted to do something that would keep me active.

“I’m not brilliant at golf, it’s very much a social thing, but there are a good group of ladies at Brickhampton Court and I’ve made a lot of friends.”

She is currently playing off 32 – her lowest handicap is 29 but she admitted “it’s gradually creeping up!”

He involvement with the Churchdown club has also allowed her to help raise money for a number of good causes – a recent Macmillan cake sale raised a shade over £750 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Brickhampton does a lot of fundraising for good causes and on Friday the club’s sales and marketing manager Clair Wright will be joining around 20 others in taking part in a fire walk at the club to raise money for Hope for Tomorrow, a dedicated charity bringing cancer care closer to patient's homes with their Mobile Cancer Care Units.

The following day Brickhampton’s golfers will be competing for the Pudsey Cup with all money raised going to Children in Need and the following Friday members will be wearing something pink in support of wear it pink for Breast Cancer.

Brickhampton Court, who celebrate their 25th anniversary next year, have also donated around £17,400 in golf prizes to various raffles this year.
