Cheltenham Hockey Club go in search of a remarkable hat-trick when their under-14 boys’ team try to retain their England Hockey Clubs Championship national title on Saturday.

And if momentum counts for anything they should be a shoo-in to take the honours at Olympic Park after a season of dreams for the club.

Last month the boys’ under-16s were crowned national champions for the first time and that was followed by more success for the club at the start of this month when the under-18 girls won the national plate.

The under-14 boys go into battle tomorrow as the defending champions – they were the first team from the club to win a national title – and youth development officer Phil Robson said: “It would be an amazing achievement if we could win all three titles this season.”

So what’s the secret of their success?

“A lot of hard work,” Robson said. “A lot of the youngsters started with the club from the age of eight and it requires a lot of dedication on the part of the players, coaches and parents.”

The under-14s kick off their pool games against Harrogate and then play Cambridge City and Surbiton. The top team goes through to the final which starts at 5pm.

Two goals from left-sided midfielder Sasha Green – one a drag flick from a penalty corner – helped the under-18 girls to defeat Sevenoaks 3-0 in the plate final at Olympic Park. Right wing Katie Gleeson got the other goal.
