The New One has what it takes to be a star turn on day three of the Cheltenham Festival

The Cotswolds will come to a standstill at around 3.30pm on day three of the Cheltenham Festival when one of its favourite horses – The New One – lines up for the Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle.

And if Nigel Twiston-Davies’ 10-year-old can pull off a famous win, then it will be matched only by the number of pints pulled by pubs around north Gloucestershire in the hours from 3.40pm until closing time tomorrow.

Guiting Power-based Twiston-Davies has described The New One as “the horse of a lifetime”, and his near neighbour Mike Edwards is not about to disagree, believing he has what it takes to add to his very impressive record of success.

“He’s a multi-course winner and is trying a further distance of three miles for the first time,” said Edwards. “I think he should have tried this trip two years ago.”

Another popular Cheltenham Festival horse – former Gold Cup contender Cue Card – goes in the preceding race.

But Edwards, who picked three winners on day one plus two seconds, doesn’t believe the Colin Tizzard runner has what it takes to win the Ryanair Chase.

Instead he’s going for the Willie Mullins-trained Un De Sceaux.

“He won it last year and I expect him to win again from old favourite Cue Card,” said Edwards, who is tipping more Irish success in the final race of the day – the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase.

Edwards is confident that Mall Dini, trained by Patrick Kelly, will land the spoils and has made him his NAP selection.

“This is the one to regain any lost monies – connections in Ireland tip this horse,” said Edwards.
