Old Cryptians clinch Gloucestershire One title, now they set sights on RFU Junior Vase

With the Gloucestershire One title already in the bag, all conquering Old Cryptians can now turn their attentions to the RFU Junior Vase.

Their supporters won't need reminding that it was a competition that they just failed to win last season, losing 17-5 at home to Reeds Weybridge at the semi-final stage which meant that the club missed out on a big day at Twickenham.

On Saturday they head to Westbury, the Dorset and Wilts Two North high-fliers, for an RFU Junior Vase quarter-final tie, with Old Cryptians player/coach Jake McMahon desperate to take the club all the way to the final this season.

"Westbury are a good side," admitted McMahon, a hooker, but they're going to have to be really good to beat us."

And the stats certainly back that up because the 46-0 win over Cirencester on Saturday which clinched the Gloucestershire One title was Old Cryptians’ 16th in 18 games, and they've drawn one of the others.

That title success has obviously eased a lot of the pressure – especially after the club went so close to promotion last season – but McMahon, who is in his second season with the club, insists there is still plenty to play for in the league.

"Our massive objective was just to get promoted," he said. "The lads have played really well and now the target is to get 100 points, that would be a massive achievement, not many teams get to 100 points and that's a massive motivation for us."

McMahon did admit that he will be able to rotate his players a little bit more over the final four games of the season – they need 17 points to reach 100 – and there's certainly no shortage of numbers at the club because recently they put out four senior teams on a Saturday.

"I can't remember a team in Gloucestershire doing that for a long time," he said. "The club is in a great place and it's been a great move for me, the last two years have been like a whirlwind."
