Dursley and Cirencester clash for the fourth time in 10 months when they meet in a Gloucestershire One game at The Whiteway on Saturday.

The two clubs have contested the Stroud and District Combination Senior Cup final for the past four years – Dursley have won all four – so have become regular sparring partners in recent times.

“Yes, there is a bit of a rivalry,” said Dursley captain Chris Perrett. “We’ve played each other a lot recently since Cirencester came into the division.”

Cirencester were playing in Western Counties North not so long ago, of course, and after challenging for promotion back to Gloucestershire Premier for much of last season just missed out in the final shake-up.

They’ve started this campaign well, however, winning 20-6 at home to newly promoted Tewkesbury.

Dursley, meanwhile, lost their opening game 21-17 at home to St Brendans Old Boys and 25-year-old Perrett, who is in his second season as captain, is desperate for that first ‘W’ of the campaign.

“It’s a bit of a derby game and it’s always tough,” said the wing. “Every single year we sit down and set ourselves goals of winning promotion and retaining the Stroud Combination Cup.

“The division is getting more difficult, it’s definitely getting tougher to get out of. There are some really good, organised teams in the division who are well drilled, but if we can get promoted I think we can compete in Gloucestershire Premier.”

Dursley did the league double over Cirencester last season, winning 21-17 at home in November and 24-20 at Cirencester in March.

Dursley, who field senior three sides, had a couple of seasons in Gloucestershire Premier after winning promotion in 2012.
