Colin Henderson Colin Henderson

Name: Colin Henderson

Date of birth: November 25, 1946

Birthplace: Belfast

Schools: Elmgrove, Belfast; Bream Secondary

Occupation: Retired

Where live: Bream

Your sport: Rugby, cricket, soccer

Your position: Watching now. Played a lot of all the above… as a centre-forward, quick right-arm bowler and a prop/second row

Clubs: Lydney rugby club, Lydney cricket club and Cinderford Town, Lynbrook and Bream football clubs

Best achievement/result and why: Cricket – 50 wickets in a season for Lydney. Bowled former England Test batsman Steve James, he would say he it was dark and he was only 11, but I know was in fact 15! Rugby – promotion with Lydney twice. Football – winning The Northern Senior League Division Two with Bream – I scored 56 goals that season which is still a record – and West Midlands Cup with Cinderford.

Style of play: Uncompromising!

Best team-mate you played with and why: Rugby – John Morris, he made me tick. He was the same at cricket. Pat Kiely, when we played rugby together I always knew he would be at my shoulder if needed (and he often was).

Best opponent and why: Rugby – Oscar Rawlings (Drybrook), he wound me up; and Phil Blakeway (ex-Gloucester and England), he scared me! Cricket – Stuart Harrison, another who could do it all.

Best manager/coach you played for and why: Football – Dicky Etheridge (at Bream), he led by example. Rugby coach – Ted Parfitt, knowledge unlimited. Cricket – Former Somerset all-rounder Graham ‘Budgie’ Burgess could bat, bowl and was a complete cricketer.

Best thing and worst thing about your sport today: I can still be involved, but money is ruining it.

What is your involvement in sport today? Still heavily involved at Lydney Rugby Club. Watch Lydney cricket where I am a vice-president.

What do you think you will be doing sporting wise in five years’ time? Breathing I would settle for right now!
