Gloucester will lock horns with old rivals Munster in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup.

The Cherry and Whites have been drawn in the same group as the Irish giants – pool two – as they return to the competition for the first time for five years.

Also in the pool are leading Premiership team Exeter Chiefs and French club Castres.

While Gloucester supporters will be looking forward to a trip to the French province of Languedoc, which is in the southern part of the country, for a lot of diehard fans it will be the games against Munster that will be of extra significance.

Fifteen years ago the two teams played in the so-called Miracle Match when Munster needed to beat Gloucester by four tries and 27 points to go through to the knockout stages and they did it, winning 33-6 with the final conversion being slotted in the final minute.

They have played each other a number of times since then of course and Munster have a very proud history in the competition – it is a competition they have won twice – and they have also been beaten finalists twice.

Their most recent success was in 2007/08. Gloucester, like Exeter and Castres, have yet to win the competition.

Meanwhile Gloucester have been drawn in the same group as Wasps and Northampton at this year’s Premiership Rugby 7s which will take place at Franklin’s Gardens on 27th and 28th July.

There are four pools of three and after the group stages are completed on Friday evening, Saturday’s matches will start at 2.30pm and see the top eight ranked teams contest the cup quarter-finals.

Meanwhile the remaining four sides will head into the plate semi-finals as they bid to lift some early-season silverware before the tournament concludes at 6.45pm.

Gloucester are two-time winners of the Premiership Rugby 7s.
