Take a close look at this picture. It was one of the great cup games of the 1971/72 season – and any other season come to that.

It was the day that Gloucester went to London Welsh, a team packed with internationals, and beat them 9-4 in what was one of the great games in the club’s history.

Gloucester fans of a certain vintage will remember the date – 4th March 1972 – and they will certainly recall the significance of the game because the win took them one step closer to the final of the National KO Cup.

It was the inaugural season of the competition and after drawing 6-6 with Coventry in the semi-final – Gloucester went through because they were the away side – they beat Moseley 17-6 in the final at Twickenham on 29th April in front of a crowd of 10,500.

The picture was sent to The Local Answer by Dave Booth, someone who has done so much for rugby in and around Gloucester over the years both as a player and an administrator.

Booth, of course, is the son of legendary Gloucester scrum-half Mickey Booth, who played well over 450 games for the club, the last being in the final against Moseley.

Booth junior said: “I thought your readers might find this picture of interest. It was taken in 1972, the famous cup game against London Welsh. In the picture are Mike Potter, Nigel Jackson, John Haines and Father for Gloucester and the great Mervyn Davis, Derek Quinnell and the other I don’t know.”
