Around 850 runners are set to go to the start line for this year’s Tewkesbury Half Marathon which gets under way at 10am tomorrow.

That number is slightly down on 2017 due to the Bristol 10K being run on the same day this year, but Tewkesbury race organiser Andy Heyes is still pleased with the number of entries.

And those runners talking part will enjoy what organisers are describing as a “spectacular” finish this year.

“The whole of the High Street will be completely closed off to cars,” said Heyes. “That should make for a great atmosphere.

“In the past we’ve just had part of the High Street closed but it will be so much better now that it is all a traffic-free zone. It will give spectators much more freedom to move about and provide a much better race feel for the runners.

“Hopefully after this year it will be cast in stone.”

The runners will start the 13.1-mile course in Gloucester Road outside Gupshill Manor before heading into town and then out into the country.

“It’s a pretty good course,” added Heyes. “It’s predominantly flat and it’s got a bit of everything because the runners compete in the town and out in the countryside. There are also a couple of smallish climbs.”

Heyes is expecting the winner to cross the line in anything from one hour, 10 minutes to one hour, 12, and he is just grateful that the sweltering conditions of the bank holiday weekend are no longer with us.

“Cor blimey,” he chuckled. “Yes, thankfully. It should be quite a bit cooler, about 13 or 14 degrees.”
