August Campaign Update

All Areas > Environment > Make Your Mark

Author: Claudie Francis, Posted: Wednesday, 1st August 2018, 10:10

As the fight for a cleaner, safer planet for all species continues, this month we have some fresh campaigns for you to sink your teeth into. The main focus is on the plastic crisis and there are a few petitions you can sign to show your support.

Waste Less, Live More
By wasting less and reducing our impact on the environment, we can improve our own (and others) health and happiness. Everyone wins. Keep Britain Tidy’s annual campaign, with a different waste-saving theme each year, shares simple tips and challenges to help us all. Reducing our waste helps the environment and saves us money and that's a recipe for smiles all round.

Earth Day – End Plastic Pollution
From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.
In response, Earth Day Network is focusing on fundamentally changing human attitude and behaviour about plastics and catalysing a significant reduction in plastic pollution.

Greenpeace: UK supermarkets "Ditch throwaway plastic packaging!"
UK supermarkets currently generate 800,000 tonnes of plastic packaging every year.
But our oceans can’t stomach any more plastic! From turtles entangled in six pack rings to whales with stomachs full of plastic bags, the effects of plastic pollution can be devastating. UK supermarket Iceland has announced its own-brand packaging is going plastic-free. By ditching plastic packaging, supermarkets have the power to lead the way in dramatically reducing the amount of single-use plastic produced.
Add your name to the petition and tell UK supermarkets to follow Iceland’s lead and ditch throwaway plastic packaging.

Greenpeace: To: Minister Alan Duncan and the UK Government "You have the power to lead on securing the largest protected area on Earth: an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary. Please help keep this precious sanctuary safe for the ocean creatures that call it home."
The Antarctic Ocean is home to a great diversity of life. It provides food and shelter to amazing creatures such as seals, orcas, whales and penguins. But a warming climate and an expanding commercial fishing industry are threatening this untouched area and its iconic creatures. The good news is we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary – the largest protected area on Earth. The UK Government plays a vital role in creating an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary. It’s a part of an Antarctic Ocean Commission which has pledged to protect the Antarctic. By working together, we can urge the UK Government to stand up for ocean protection and support the world’s largest Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.
