Exams are a stressful time for adolescents, particularly with so much riding on the outcome. As parents and guardians, it’s essential to provide support that addresses physical and mental wellbeing, while promoting effective study habits. Here are some strategies to help your children navigate this challenging time.

Exams and the build-up to them can be extremely stressful, particularly if there are other environmental stressors. There are many techniques to support mental health, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and long-term information retention, including mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, yoga and meditation. There are also apps specifically designed for mindfulness and supporting learning skills; both a valuable resource for students.

Exercise alleviates stress and improves concentration

Physical health plays an enormous role in the build-up to and during the exam period. Regular exercise alleviates stress and improves concentration. Activities such as walking the dog or participating in sports can help students manage anxiety and maintain physical and mental health.

Provide your children with nutritious meals and encourage them to make good decisions with respect to their eating habits. Avoiding excessive sugary snacks and energy drinks is recommended, as the high levels of caffeine and sugar can pose significant health risks including anxiety, insomnia, dehydration, high blood pressure and even heart palpitations. Consumption of energy drinks has also been linked to negative behavioural changes and potential long-term dependency.

Promoting good study habits is essential for success. If possible, create a designated, distraction-free study area. A well-lit, organised space can significantly enhance focus and productivity. Practise past papers – familiarity with exam formats boosts confidence, helps students understand what to expect and reduces uncertainty. Ensuring adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive function. Establishing a good bedtime routine can facilitate restful sleep, making it easier to focus during study time.

Social interaction can provide a vital emotional outlet

Encourage your child to spend time with friends, even during exam season, as the social interaction can provide a vital emotional outlet. Organising small study groups can combine socialising with productive work. Wherever possible, make technology an ally – leverage educational apps and online resources, while encouraging social media limits during study and relaxation times.

A study schedule can help prevent overwhelm

Time management is crucial, particularly for younger teens. Create a study schedule that breaks down subjects into manageable chunks, facilitating balanced preparation alongside regular breaks to prevent overwhelm.

Maintain open communication channels and create an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their feelings or concerns.

By supporting your child’s physical, mental and emotional health and fostering good study habits, you can significantly enhance their chances of success. Your involvement will help to create a nurturing environment, enabling them to thrive.
