A spotlight on men

I feel the male population does not get the same coverage when it comes to fashion and skin care. The male skin care market has soared as more and more men are taking it seriously so, this month, I decided to make my article all about the boys.

Shirts

The shirt figures everywhere in 2024. For a while it took a back seat, especially during the pandemic when so many people worked from home and, unless you were on a zoom call, who cared? Jermyn Street in London is recognised as the famed street of shirt makers, whether bespoke or ready to wear.

Frankly, a crisp smart shirt ticks so many boxes and not only makes you feel good, but look good, too. A classic cut never goes out of fashion – just ask Thomas Pink, which was founded in 1984 by three Irish brothers and is still going strong today. Thomas Pink’s Jonathan Towle explains why shirts are the foundation of everything they make, including details such as collar linings, split yokes, and intricate French seams, alongside their mother-of-pearl buttons.

Evening wear

Forget black, even when it comes to black tie events. Guys are giving the girls a big run for their money, particularly at red carpet events. The great influential designer Tom Ford has been instrumental in introducing flamboyant styles and colours; there is now huge demand for rich velvet dinner jackets.

When Daniel Craig wore a fuchsia pink velvet dinner jacket, it shocked people at first, but the consensus was that if it’s good enough for James Bond, it’s good enough for the high street, so the trend became ever more popular.
Jacket lapels are changing to a slightly more shawl-type lapel. Dunhill is a classic brand that favours a silky double-breasted dinner jacket paired with wide cut pleated trousers. Corduroy is also proving popular, especially in bolder tones. Ralph Lauren, always one step ahead, has been seen wearing jeans with a tuxedo jacket.

Erling Haaland

With his viking good looks, Manchester City footballer Erling Haaland has turned men’s fashion upside down with his love and extensive wardrobe of silk pyjamas, which he wears on a regular basis – not just at home! He’s also on-point with his accessories, as Swiss luxury watch brand Breitling have signed him up as an ambassador; a great fit as Erling knows a thing or two about watches.

Erling is named after his grandfather who wore a Breitling watch and this was his first introduction to the brand. It’s incredible to think he now represents them. At least he will never have an excuse to be late for a match!

Male grooming

The global male grooming market is booming, with US reports predicting it to be worth a huge $115 billion by 2028, up from $80 billion in 2022. Worldwide, men are seeking a more polished appearance and investing heavily in skin care. Brands are also being created for gender neutral customers, which is an expanding market.

Dermatologists say male skin is generally thicker and oilier, so it requires specific products to address this. From Boots to Harrods, men will have no problem finding their perfect routine to suit every skin type. I predict an increase in couples arguing about who gets access to the bathroom mirror first!
