The season of renewal

Winter is finally drawing to a close and spring is in the air; the season that is all about renewal, a coming to life after the huddle of winter. The advent of spring brings with it a new sense of energy for tackling those projects in our homes we’ve had on pause. Whatever you’re planning, whether a large or smaller project, follow this step-by-step approach to make sure you get the transformation you’re looking for.
Find your own sense of expression. What is it you want to create? Seek out your inspiration, whatever the source, and keep that in mind as you work on the design. Your surroundings should express elements of who you are and how you live.
Set your budget and use it wisely
Think about the whole project. Scope it out in detail so you can set your budget and get accurate quotes from contractors if you plan to use them. Use your budget wisely, but don’t be afraid to splash out on some important elements that are going to really make your project sing.
Make sure you balance the focus and your budget across both the practical and the design aesthetic. A room needs to function well and have the look and feel you wish for.
Draw a plan of the space. It can be simple, but needs to be to scale. Work out the room layout and placing of furniture on the plan so you can see how everything fits.
Send for samples of everything
Work on the design of the entire room together, as a whole scheme. Make a moodboard to check that your choices work together and send for samples of everything, including colour testing pots for paint. Don’t choose anything from photos, brochures, magazines or online – colours and textures can look very different in real life to how they look on a screen or printed page.
The materials you use for the hard surfaces are really important. Try to use good quality, natural materials that will age well, wherever you can.
Consider the lighting carefully, as this is what creates atmosphere. You need layers of lighting across the room. Don’t go crazy on ceiling spots, as they can give a very stark light and too much light where it’s not needed, such as in a lounge or bedroom.
Consider the small details
Choose every element yourself, intentionally and in time; the colours, lighting, furniture, fabrics and patterns. Try to be brave with some of your design choices so that you push your design further than you might usually go, and make sure you consider the small details.
Finally, keep a detailed record of everything that goes into the project, especially paint colours and finishes in case you need to make minor touch-ups in the future.
Do your research on all of these aspects and I’m sure you’ll be delighted with the outcome.Other Images
