Corse and Staunton are hoping to make it third time lucky in the Village Knockout Cup next season.

They were beaten in the Gloucestershire final for the second year running yesterday, going down by five wickets to Marshfield.

A crowd of some 150 turned up at the playing fields in Corse to watch the 40-overs-a-side game and saw the hosts post a score of 172 for six.

“We were about 20 runs short,” said club chairman Graham Bruce.

Marshfield reached their target in the 37th over with five wickets remaining.

Matt Cox top-scored for Corse and Staunton with 36 and also chipped in with two wickets.

There were also useful contributions with the bat for the home side by Shaun Turner (34), Matt Brown (28 not) and Bertie Wyatt (25), while Kiran Chakraborty took two for 31 from eight overs when Marshfield batted.

What made the defeat tougher to take for Corse and Staunton was that they had beaten Marshfield in the competition last season, on the way to the final against Rockhampton.

Ironically, Corse and Staunton beat Rockhampton to book their place in this season’s final.

Corse and Staunton did have some success over the weekend, however, because they thumped Lydney by 157 runs in a County League Division One game.

Matt Cox made 108 of their 275 for seven and in reply Lydney were skittled in 30.1 overs with Mike Gittings taking four for 11.
