James Job is the star as Tetbury enjoy a thrilling tie with Cheltenham 2nds
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, 12:00
Quick bowler James Job was the last-ball hero as Tetbury snatched a remarkable tie against Cheltenham 2nds.
He caught and bowled Luke Sellers for a first-ball duck to leave the home side 225-9 at the end of a thrilling final over, an over that also included two run-outs.
Cheltenham went into the 45th over needing just two runs to win with four wickets remaining but after two dot balls Archie Hackett was run out by Sam Price for 29.
And that was just the start because next ball Job ran out Amith James without scoring.
A leg-bye off the fifth ball brought the scores level but then Job worked his magic to leave honours even at the end of an incredible game on Saturday.
Job is in his second season with the club and captain Alex Evans said: “He was the hero, he bowled superbly at the death. To defend two going into the last over was unbelievable, it was a great game.”
Job finished with 2-53 from his nine overs and also claimed the vital wicket of Thiwanka Kekulawala, who was sixth out in the 43rd over when he was caught in the deep with the score on 219 after making 91 from 81 balls.
“It was a helluva grab on the boundary at cow corner by Mike Anderson,” continued Evans, who is 35. “He was winning the game for them on his own, he was unbelievable, he’s the best cricketer I’ve played against.
“It was a fantastic game of cricket – 450 runs and 17 wickets in 90 overs, it’s one of the best games I’ve played in.”
Earlier Tetbury had rallied from 102-7 after winning the toss at the Victoria Ground, thanks largely to an eighth-wicket partnership of 100 between Sam Price and Evans.
Price, who came in when the score was 74-4, made 72 from 75 balls, including six fours and three sixes, and Evans said: “He was superb, he smashed it around the park, he came in at a difficult situation.”
Evans, who has been with the club all his life and is in his fifth season as captain, finished unbeaten on 53.
Cheltenham, too, made an uncertain start to their innings and at one stage were 65-3 before Kekulawala led their counter-attack.
But Tetbury held firm – Alex Wyer and Rhys Lamplugh claimed two wickets apiece – and while there was nothing to separate the two teams on Saturday there’s hardly anything to separate them in Division One of the Gloucestershire Cricket League either because they both have 65 points after five games.
They’ve both won two and lost two, albeit fourth-placed Tetbury have a slightly better net run rate.
“It’s a very competitive league this year,” said Evans, who led Tetbury to the Gloucestershire County League Division Two title last season.
Cheltenham 2nds finished runners-up – Tetbury beat them twice in 2024 – and Evans added: “This is our first season back in Division One for 10 years.
“We’ve never played in the West of England Premier League and the aim is to play as high as we can.
“Realistically we want to consolidate this season and then push on next season.”
Tetbury travel to eighth-placed Lydney on Saturday while Cheltenham 2nds visit Rockhampton, who are sixth in the 10-strong division.Other Images
