Luke Woolway scores 200 as Painswick beat Goatacre in high-scoring thriller
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 18th August 2025, 11:00
Luke Woolway smashed a double hundred for Painswick in a run-fest at Goatacre on Saturday.
The 26-year-old continued his prolific form by making exactly 200 as more than 680 runs were scored in 100 overs on the day.
Painswick, who won the toss, made 345-8 but they were pushed all the way by the home side who lost their final wicket from the last ball of the innings when a six would have levelled the scores.
The victory was Painswick’s eighth in Premier 2 Glos/Wilts of the West of England Premier League and cements their position in sixth spot in the 10-strong division.
Woolway had arrived at the wicket with the score 18-2 but he got a boundary from his third ball and went on to hit 18 fours and 11 sixes in his 151-ball innings, sharing in a partnership of 208 for the fourth wicket with Alastair Connolly, who made 74 from 69 balls.
“The wicket was good, it was a real flat track,” said Woolway, who was born in Johannesburg. “Goatacre is a fairly small ground but it was an innings to remember.
“I once scored 218 when I was 13 but that was on an astro pitch in South Africa in a T20 game, it wasn’t as good as this.”
Woolway has enjoyed an outstanding summer. This is the fourth time he has reached three figures in the league and he also scored a century in the National Village Knockout.
“This has been my best season by far,” said Woolway, who is in his sixth campaign with the club.
“Nobody has scored 200 for Painswick before, it’s something I’ve been chasing for a while.”
And yet despite Woolway’s heroics, Goatacre, who could still overhaul Dumbleton in the race for the title, so nearly got the better of Painswick.
David Miles made 124 from 108 balls but they still needed 27 from the final over with their last-wicket pair at the crease.
That final over was bowled by Reece Morris but Ross Dixie smashed 20 from the first five balls – two fours and two sixes – before being run out from the final delivery.
“It was closer than I thought but I always expected us to win,” said Woolway, normally a wicketkeeper who bowled four overs of seam and picked up 2-34, including the wicket of Miles.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
