Mo Mushtaq was the late hero for Birdlip & Brimpsfield on Saturday

New-ball bowler Mo Mushtaq dismissed Simon Bennett to clinch a nail-biting two-run win for Birdlip & Brimpsfield against Hatherley and Reddings 3rds.

Mushtaq, who took 1-20 from his six overs, bowled Bennett for 27 as the visitors were bowled out for 137 with six of their 40 overs remaining.

It was Birdlip's third win of the season and lifted them out of the relegation zone in Division 6A of the Gloucestershire Cricket League.

They are now eighth and the win was all the more impressive because second-placed Hatherley arrived at Sinclair Field having previously lost only two league games this season.

“We could have won it earlier because we dropped a catch before taking the last wicket,” said skipper Paul Smith.

Smith had earlier won the toss but his side were soon in trouble as they slipped to 37-4.

They were rescued by a sixth-wicket partnership of 58 between Chris Hieron (32) and Jacob Bidmead (35 not) which helped them reach 139-7 in their 40 overs.

“It wasn’t a good pitch to bat on,” said Smith, who nevertheless was delighted that his side managed to beat one of the division’s high-fliers.

They’ve now won three of their last four games, a run that includes a one-wicket win against Apperley 2nds.

Birdlip travel to Painswicks 2nds, who are two points and one place below them in the 10-strong division, on Saturday while Hatherley host mid-table Lydney 2nds.
