Woodmancote are flying high after second successive promotion
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 3rd September 2025, 09:00
Woodmancote are celebrating back-to-back promotions after winning the Gloucestershire Cricket League Division Three title.
They finished 15 points clear of Gloucester AIW Sports, who are also promoted, after picking up nine points from their game against Fairford on Saturday, a game that was abandoned because of rain at the halfway stage with Fairford having made 311-6 from 40 overs.
Mike Morris’ men have won 14 of their league games this season and lost just twice – two were abandoned – and Morris said: “It’s been a very good season, the boys have done well.”
Morris, who is 42, has been skipper for the past two seasons and he continued: “We’ve got a good bunch of boys, we’re on our way back.
“When I first joined the club we were in Division One, so we’re getting there.”
Morris said he is undecided whether he will continue as captain next season but he’s full of praise for those who have played for him this season.
Opening batsman Ade Stenner has enjoyed a standout season and Morris said: “He’s steadied the ship at the top of the innings and when he hasn’t got runs, someone else has stepped up.
“Four or five players have scored 300 or 400 runs.”
Stenner, an ex-Cheltenham player, has scored more than 970 runs at just over 61, and Morris continued: “He scores his runs very quickly, we’ve had four or five games where we’ve chased 200 in the final 25 overs, he’s been a big part of it.
“He’s a great lad, he’s really enjoying it.”
And the bowlers have also played their part, too.
Morris finished the campaign with 23 wickets and he said: “The bowling has been fantastic, five players have got 20-plus wickets.”
Pace bowler Jaymon Needham, the club's Australian overseas player, led the way with 37 wickets and Morris added: “Hopefully he’ll play again next season, we’d love to have him on board.”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
