Shortwood United head to Stonehouse Town tonight in upbeat mood after an encouraging 1-1 draw at Fairford Town in their opening pre-season friendly.

It’s a busy period for the Southern League Division One South and West side because they host Forest Green Rovers on Friday (7.30pm).

There were some encouraging signs for Shortwood manager Paul Meredith at Cinder Lane against a side newly promoted to the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Both keepers had plenty to do and George Burton, in goal for Shortwood, looked most assured with his handling.

Sam Hunt almost gave the visitors the lead after seven minutes with an excellent free-kick which was heading for the top corner before the goalkeeper intervened.

Liam Meredith had an effort disallowed for offside four minutes later but 60 seconds later they were ahead.

Jack Freeman and Marley Thomas combined well down the right and when the ball came low into the box Liam Meredith turned the ball home.

Fairford levelled after 20 minutes when Jason Halfhender held off a challenge to score with a strong finish.

Although there were no more goals there were plenty of chances with Thomas going closest for Shortwood in the second half when he hit a post.

Tonight’s game at Stonehouse starts at 7pm.

Shortwood Utd: George Burton, Ryan Meredith, Rich Thwaite, Sam Hunt, Nathan Marks, Adam Price, Ben Prictor, Marley Thomas, Liam Meredith, Jack Freeman, Harry Burns, Luke Williams, Will Hawes, Bobby Humphreys
