St Paul’s United missed out on a place in Division One of the Cheltenham League next season in the toughest of ways.

They were beaten in a penalty shootout in the Division Two play-off final, losing 5-3 to Bredon Reserves after the game had finished 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.

And it was even harder for the Cheltenham club, who have enjoyed such success over the past couple of campaigns, because they were 2-0 ahead at half-time with goals by Connor Uren and Mike West.

Bredon, though, never gave up and second-half goals by Jordan Huggins and Toby Patterson – the second just a couple of minutes before the final whistle – gave them the chance to claim victory in the shootout.

The other two play-off finals were more clearcut with Leckhampton Rovers defeating Welland Reserves 5-2 in the Division Three final and Malvern Cave overcoming Cheltenham Saracens Reserves 5-1 in the Division Four final.

Glen Hozier and Martin Whitelow got two apiece for Leckhampton – Joe Lawrence got their other – while Joe Rowland and Charlie Tippell were on target for Welland.

Meanwhile, Toby Boswell grabbed a hat-trick for Malvern Cave and there was one apiece for Courtney Bray and Aston Howard. Sam Holder got Saracens’ goal with a penalty.

All three games were played at Kayte Lane in Bishop’s Cleeve and curtain comes down on the Cheltenham League season on Thursday when Andoversford and Tewkesbury Town battle it out for the Senior Charity Cup at Cheltenham Town FC (kick-off 7pm).
