Cheltenham United are looking to kick on in the closing stages of the season, as they chase a speedy return to the Premier Division of the Cheltenham League.

They currently sit in second spot in the 13-strong Division One – two go up – and know that with nine games to play promotion is very much in their hands.

And they will certainly be looking for three points on Saturday when they host lowly Falcons Reserves, although that will not be easy against a side whose confidence will have been lifted after their 3-1 win over Winchcombe Town Reserves at the weekend.

Cheltenham United go into the game on the back of three draws, one of them at home to runaway leaders Montpellier four days ago.

They drew 0-0 against a side who were on a 29-game winning streak going back to last season and Cheltenham United’s long-serving centre midfielder Kris Mohan said: “I’m not keen on celebrating a draw but it was obviously a pretty good result.

“They’ve got a very strong squad and probably should be playing a couple of divisions higher but a draw was definitely a fair result.

“We limited them to long range efforts and we had a couple of chances to nick it at the end.”

That point came on the back of a 3-3 draw at Tewkesbury Town Reserves and a 2-2 draw at home to Bishop’s Cleeve, results that have allowed the chasing pack to get that bit closer.

But those results have certainly not discouraged Mohan, who started playing for the club in 2013, a year after they were founded.

“We played most of the game against Tewkesbury with 10 men,” he said. “We scored with a last-minute Matty Rawlings goal.

“It’s a strong division, there are lots of really good teams. Several teams have got games in hand on us, we’ve still got to play Whaddon Reserves and Tredworth Reserves twice.

“The aim is to get back into the Premier Division. Last season was tough – it was a transitional year – but it’s important that we do get back up because if we do I think we can do well.”
