Regular readers of The Local Answer online will know that Gotherington Juniors Football Club are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.

The club are one of the big sporting success stories in Gloucestershire and it’s entirely fitting that their special year should coincide with another landmark achievement.

And it’s not one landmark achievement, it’s two, because Gotherington Jaguars Girls Under-15s and Under-13s have both reached the final of their respective County Cup competitions.

It is the first time that any girls’ teams from the club have reached a County Cup final and their success is all the more impressive because the girls started playing football at Gotherington only five or so years ago.

“What a great way to celebrate our 25th year,” said under-13s' coach Wayne Morgan.

The club have some 150 girls on their books across all age groups and Morgan continued: “Many of the players taking part in the County Cup finals are founder members at the club, it’s a tremendous achievement.”

Indeed it is. Both finals will take place on Sunday at the Gloucestershire FA’s headquarters in Almondsbury with the under-13s, who kick-off at 10am, taking on St Nicholas from Chipping Sodbury, while the under-15s face Gloucester City in a game that gets under way at 1pm.

And both Gotherington teams will certainly be optimistic ahead of their big day out.

The under-13s were crowned Gloucester County Girls League champions last season and are second this time around. They are also through to the last four of the League Cup so the treble is still a possibility.

The under-15s, meanwhile, have already beaten Bristol Rovers in the County Cup this season and booked their place in the final with a hugely impressive win over Cheltenham Town. They, too, are second in their league.

“Girls’ football at Gotherington has grown considerably in a short space of time, from 10 players on day one to over 150 girls and 20 coaches now involved,” added Morgan.

“The club is deeply proud of the two teams who have reached the  County Cup final.

“Many of the players on the field will be part of County, Emerging Talent Centre and Academy Football.

"Gotherington Juniors has created a strong and sustainable girls’ football platform, which is always open to new players from the age of six to 16.”
