Dursley Town Ladies have scored 13 goals in their last two games in the Gloucestershire County Women’s League but face a big test when they visit table-topping Bristol Brunel Women tomorrow.

The Division One leaders have won all 11 of their league games, are five points clear of nearest challengers Hartpury Women and have conceded just three goals.

Third-placed Dursley will at least travel with some optimism after defeating Iron Acton Women 9-0 at home and winning 4-3 at Longlevens Ladies.

They also thumped Cheltenham Saracens Women 8-1 in the League Cup prior to those two league wins, so scoring goals has not been a problem.

They’ve scored 38 in their 11 league games – 14 more than Bristol Brunel – and in Alishia Mabombo and Lily Ryan, they have two players who certainly know how to find the back of the net.

They’ve both scored 15 this season and club treasurer Neil Sharp, who is a big supporter of the women’s team, said: “They are both very quick. Alishia is tall, she has just come through from the under-17s.

“Lily is in her early 20s and plays out wide, they are both good players.”

Joint managers Stephanie Hill and Lucy Bennett have brought through a number of youngsters this season and Sharp, a former player and chairman of the club, said: “It’s made a big difference, we’re having a much better season.

“Last season we finished second from bottom and we thought we may be relegated.”

Dursley host Olveston United Women in the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Sunday 1st March and will be hopeful of progressing against a team who are three places and six points below them in the table, albeit Olveston have played two games fewer.

“Bristol Brunel and Hartpury are comfortably the best two teams in the league,” continued Sharp, who has been involved with Dursley since the early 1990s.

“For the rest of the teams, the fight is for third place. Bristol Brunel will be a very tough test on Sunday.”

Hartpury have scored 51 goals in their 12 games and are nine points clear of Dursley, who have won six and drawn one in the league.
