Forest Green Rovers have secured the services of experienced shot stopper Adam Smith following his release by League One side Bristol Rovers.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has more than 100 appearances under his belt, the vast majority of those coming during a two-year spell with Northampton Town where he was promoted from League Two and named in the League Two team of the season the same campaign.

He went on to play 28 games with Rovers after joining in 2017 but after his contract came to an end, he chose The New Lawn as his next challenge over interest from sides higher up the football ladder as he looks to compete with James Montgomery for the coveted number one jersey.

“I spoke to the manager when I was on holiday and he didn’t need to sell the club to me much, I knew what they were about,” said Smith.

“I think it is a good opportunity for me to move my game onto the next level.

“When you see how close they were to going up last season through the play-offs and only five points off the automatics, hopefully next season they can take it to the next level.

“I’d like to say I’m experienced in this league, I enjoyed my football when I played for Northampton in this league and hopefully we can kick on now.”

The 6ft 5ins goalkeeper is a commanding figure and started his career at Middlesbrough before joining Leicester City.

He appeared on the bench nine times for the Foxes as back up to Ben Hamer while Kasper Schmeichel was injured and was sent on loan a number of times during his time at the King Power Stadium.

He signed for Northampton Town in June 2015 and enjoyed two seasons with the Cobblers, making 94 appearances and was their number one when they won the League Two title in 2016.

When his contract came to an end with the League Two side, he moved west to Bristol Rovers where he made 28 appearances.
