In-form Tewkesbury Town are climbing the Gloucestershire County League

Three wins in a row have lifted Tewkesbury Town into the top half of the Gloucestershire County League.

Last season’s Northern Senior League champions made an uncertain start to the campaign, losing their opening three games, but after drawing 1-1 with Filton Athletic, they have turned things around.

Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to bottom-of-the-table Chalford moved them up to eighth in the 17-strong division, and club official Stuart Bailey said they are looking upwards.

The victory over Chalford followed 1-0 home wins against Henbury & Rockleaze and Totterdown United, and Bailey said: “Things are looking much better.”

Tewkesbury won 28 and drew one of their 30 league games in 2024/25 – they had a goal difference of 99 – and manager James Coates is obviously delighted they’ve returned to winning ways over the past month or so.

“It was a bit of a rocky start but we’ve refocused,” continued Bailey.

“Teams are lot more disciplined and drilled at this level, games are relentless for 90 minutes.

“You can’t switch off for a minute otherwise you’ll get punished.”

This is the first time Tewkesbury have played in the County League, so what is the aim this season?

“We want to win every game so that means winning the league,” said Bailey. “But I think finishing in the top five would be a good season.”

And Bailey believes that’s a realistic target.

“I think we’ll get better and stronger as the season goes on,” he said.

Tewkesbury host Chalford in a GFA Senior Amateur Cup second-round tie on Saturday before returning to league action with a trip to 14^th-placed Wick on Saturday 25th October.
