Rising Stars: Whaddon United Youth Under-13s
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 4th February 2026, 10:00
In-form Whaddon United Youth Under-13s are chasing a treble this season.
They are top of Division One in the Cheltenham Youth League after winning 10 and drawing one of their 11 games, they are through to the semi-finals of the League Cup and they are in the last eight of the County Cup.
And they are winning matches in style, too. They have scored 14 goals in a game twice, in another game they’ve scored 13 and in another four they’ve reached double figures.
“They are doing really well, fair play to them,” said manager Adam Russell. “They’ve really developed over the past couple of years.
“We won the league and the league cup last season.”
And they nearly completed the treble because they were beaten on penalties in the County Cup final.
They travel to play Rockleaze Rangers in the County Cup on Sunday and they host Cinderford Town Youth in the League Cup on Sunday 8th March.
By the time they take on Cinderford they will be hoping to be a step closer to claiming back-to-back league titles.
Gotherington Juniors Spartans, who they travel to play on Sunday 15th February, are level on points with them at the top of the table but they have played two games more.
Russell has been with the team since the under-7s and he said: “We try to play football properly.
“We’ve tried from an early age to play the ball out from the back although that wasn’t easy on the pitch we played on at the weekend!”
Whaddon won 8-1 at home to Lakeside Youth Whites and Russell continued: “This year we’re playing on bigger pitches and with bigger goals.
“We were strong last year, but there’s more space on the pitch this season.”
They are also playing 11-a-side – they played 9-a-side last season – and they are looking to finish the season with a flourish.
Russell’s son Spencer captains the side and his dad said: “He’s an attacking midfielder, he plays alongside Skye Keenan who is also an attacking midfielder.
“She’s absolutely fantastic, she plays for Wolves on Saturdays.”
The under-13s are one of three youth teams run by Whaddon United. They also have teams at under-16 and under-17 age groups and Russell said: “The club want more youth teams and also want to run a girls’ team.”
