Robbie Savage takes charge at Forest Green Rovers

Robbie Savage is the new manager of Forest Green Rovers.

The National League club confirmed the appointment of the former Wales midfielder today and the 50-year-old was due to take his first training session this afternoon.

Savage takes over from ex-Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill and is expected to work closely with director of football Mark Bowen, a former Wales team-mate.

"I feel I have an opportunity to develop a squad to create an attacking brand of football - an aggressive form of football to try and get Forest Green back into the EFL,” Savage told the club’s website today.

"I want a fast, exciting style but the most important thing is to win games."

Savage guided Macclesfield to the Northern Premier League Premier Division title last season, and with it, promotion to National League North in what was his first in charge.

He played close to 350 Premier League games for Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.

Forest Green missed out on an immediate return to the Football League last season when they were beaten in the play-offs by Southend United. They ended the regular season in third spot.
