Shaun Green strikes to give Cheltenham United victory in Cheltenham League Senior Charities Cup final
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 1st May 2025, 09:00
Shaun Green was the toast of Whaddon Road as Cheltenham United celebrated the biggest win in their history last night.
The 6ft-plus striker scored the only goal of the game against Cheltenham Tigers to clinch the Cheltenham League’s Senior Charities Cup, latching onto a pass from central midfielder Kris Mohan and tucking a right-footed shot home from the edge of the penalty area.
The goal came just before the hour mark and Danny Beorby, who co-manages the team with Mohan, said: “I think we could have been two or three up by the 75th minute.
“It was a tight game, they had some big chances in the last 10 minutes which meant a very nervy ending but I couldn’t be prouder of the lads.
“It’s an unbelievable achievement, it’s fantastic for everyone.
“It was a great experience for the lads, I’m so pleased for them because it wasn’t easy in those conditions, it was very hot.”
Premier Division Cheltenham United, who play two divisions above Cheltenham Tigers, went into the game as favourites, although the Division Two side were able to hold their own until centre-forward Green struck.
“It was a great pass from Kris and Shaun did the rest,” added Beorby. “Shaun is an unbelievable player, he gives so much to the team.
“He’s athletic, energetic, aggressive, he never gives defenders a moment’s rest.”
And what makes Cheltenham United’s success at the home of Cheltenham Town Football Club all the more pleasing is that they produced when they needed to.
“This was the first time we’ve reached the final of this competition,” said Beorby. “We’ve made memories that will last with us forever.”
And Mohan added: “I want to give credit to Cheltenham Tigers, they gave us a very good game.
“I have been at this club for 12 years now and running it for the past nine, what keeps me going every single week is the group of lads that we have year on year.
“It's an absolute privilege to be a part of it and I am so proud of everyone involved in this club on what is an historic night."Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
