As the start of the Gallagher Premiership season looms large, Gloucester have added some depth to their front row resources with the signing of South African Corné Fourie.

The 31-year-old, capable of playing hooker or loosehead prop, will add vast experience to the Cherry and Whites squad. Previously with the Blue Bulls, Pumas and Lions, Fourie has represented the Lions and Stormers in Super Rugby as well as spending time in Japan with the Panasonic Wild Knights.

Capped at under-20 level by South Africa, he has also represented the South African Barbarians and will be a welcome addition to the squad according to director of rugby David Humphreys.

“Corné’s versatility will be incredibly useful to us, especially with James Hanson continuing with his rehabilitation following surgery towards the end of last season,” Humphreys said.

“He’s played a lot of Super Rugby and featured in some high-profile games such as Super Rugby semi-finals and finals.

“He will fit in quickly as there are a number of his former team-mates here and will add strength in depth to a key area of the squad.”

And Fourie admitted that he’s excited to embark upon a new chapter in his career and looking forward to playing for head coach Johan Ackermann.

“Like so many others on South Africa, I’ve kept a close eye on Gloucester Rugby since Ackers moved there and I’ve been really impressed by what I’ve seen,” he said.

“And, of course, so many of my former team-mates are now part of the Gloucester Rugby squad, so I’m really looking forward to linking up with them and meeting the rest of the other players and staff.

“The Gallagher Premiership is a very tough league, with some top-class teams and I can’t wait to test myself over in England and hopefully help the team to achieve great success.”
