A Gloucester legend will be the special guest on a special day for Painswick Rugby Club on Saturday.

Terry Fanolua will be the main speaker at their 150th anniversary dinner, a dinner that is expected to be attended by around 170 people.

It will take place at the clubhouse at 7.30pm and will follow a day of celebratory rugby which will feature players from the past, present and future.

Painswick’s Colts, Vets and 1st XV will play games against teams from the Stroud and District Combination with the matches kicking off at 11am, 1pm and 3pm respectively.

“It’s going to be a very exciting day,” said club secretary Chris Coombs, who is playing in the Vets’ game. “It will be a chance to catch up with a lot of people.”

Coombs, a centre, will be playing his first game of the season on Saturday.

“I haven’t officially retired,” said the 42-year-old, who has been playing for the club for around 20 years. “I’m going to play a few minutes, my body is falling apart!”

Fanolua, a top drawer centre for Gloucester for a decade from the mid-1990s, will be joined by a whole host of dignitaries at the club’s dinner.

They include Gloucestershire RFU chairman Simon Collyer-Bristow, Rob Udwin from the RFU, Russ Hillier, who is president of the Stroud Combination, GRFU president Adrian Siddorn and Simon Thornton of the GRFU.

Painswick, meanwhile, have enjoyed a fine season having led Counties 4 Gloucestershire North for much of the season before losing out in race for the title on the final day when they lost 17-5 at Longlevens 2nds, who pipped them for the title.

“We’re still waiting for confirmation but we think we’ll be promoted,” added Coombs. “We’ve brought in some new young players this season, it’s been very good.”
