Smiths produce a stunning performance to win the RFU Community Cup Counties 2 Championship at Twickenham

A sparkling seven-try super-show saw Smiths crowned the cup kings at Twickenham on Saturday.
They demolished St Mary’s Old Boys 49-19 to clinch the RFU Community Cup Counties 2 Championship on a red-hot day in south west London.
They chose the biggest stage to produce their best performance of the season with head coach Ben Parker saying of the victory: “It's massive. It was such a perfect day.
“It will live long in the memory and we'll talk about it forever. It was such an honour and a privilege to be part of it.”
And it’s easy to see why.
“We were fantastic,” Parker continued. “It was amazing to see that all 22 players delivered at the moment you needed them to deliver.
“We showed real intent, aggression, work-rate and discipline to stick to the gameplan. We played at a pace and accuracy they couldn't handle.
“Our bench was crucial on a hot day when our energy was flagging. We could bring real quality onto the pitch which invigorated us.”
And the win was just that bit more special because Smiths had twice been beaten by St Mary’s in Counties 2 Gloucestershire this season, shipping more than 100 points along the way.
“We were very poor both times we played them in the league and were probably missing some key players,” added Parker.
“We were in really good shape going into the final. We were only missing two or three players through injury/unavailability whereas the rest of the squad were fit and raring to go.”
The win also went a long way to making up for the disappointment of 12 months ago when they were beaten 31-19 by Old Elthamians in the final of the same competition.
“It helped that we'd been to Twickenham before,” said Parker.
“We knew what to expect, how the logistics and timings work. We weren’t overawed by the occasion.
“If I'm honest too, I think St Mary’s expected to win easily, which was fair based on the league fixtures, and we took them by surprise.”
Mitch Renton scored two of their tries and there was one apiece for Dan Jarvis, Oli Aherne, Duncan Spurrier and Charles Peters. Marcus Raymond slotted three conversions and two penalties and Smiths were also awarded a penalty try.
Smiths have enjoyed phenomenal success over the past few seasons, winning league titles, cup competitions and the RFU Community Cup Counties 2 South Plate but winning a trophy at Twickenham is something that only a select few achieve.
“It’s probably not for me to say whether it’s the biggest day in the club's history but definitely the biggest day in my time at Smiths and it must be right up there for everyone else,” said Parker.
And Parker is already looking to the future.
“Hopefully this win is a stepping stone for us to drive on, work our way up the leagues and keep building this fantastic rugby club,” he said.
