“My heart says Gordon League but my head says Smiths.”

So says Old Cryptians chairman Eric Reddy as the race for the Counties 2 Gloucestershire North title reaches the closing stages.

Smiths have a two-point advantage over the Gloucester club and both have five games to play, with Old Cryptians hosting Smiths  on Saturday.

Old Cryptians travel to Gordon League on Saturday 4th March, so they could have a big say in the destination of this season’s title.

“It’s definitely between Smiths and Gordon League,” said Reddy, whose club have climbed to fourth in recent weeks. “We’ve got a very strong relationship with Gordon League, they are near neighbours and I’d like to see them do it but I think Smiths will just clinch it.

“It’s obviously going to be tough against Smiths on Saturday as it will be against Gordon League, but we’ll give it a go in both games. They are both good teams.”

Coney Hill were very much in the title hunt up until a couple of weeks ago but successive defeats to first Smiths (19-29) and then Gordon League (27-26) have left them 15 points off the pace, although they have played a game fewer.

Only two of Smiths’ final five games are at the Prince of Wales Stadium while Gordon League, who are at Old Centralians 2nds tomorrow, have home advantage in three of their remaining five matches.

Smiths won the Gloucestershire 1 North title last season, finishing four points clear of second-placed Gordon League.
