Almost Athletes chairman Peter Mitchener looking forward to running the Cheltenham Half Marathon for a very good cause
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Saturday, 20th September 2025, 09:00
Peter Mitchener, chairman of Almost Athletes, reckons the Cheltenham Half Marathon is one of the best 13.1-mile events around.
The recently-turned 60-year-old has run the race “six or seven times” and will again be lining up at Cheltenham Racecourse for tomorrow’s 9am start.
“It’s the support,” he said. “It feels like the whole town comes out to watch the runners. They support us all the way round, it’s fabulous.
“The route takes us through the town, we run up and down The Prom and they’re all cheering us on, the noise there is amazing.”
Mitchener joined Cheltenham-based Almost Athletes in 2015 and has been chairman for the past three years but he won’t be wearing the club’s vest tomorrow.
“I’ll be wearing my Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity running vest on Sunday,” he said. “There will be about 250 of us, I’m raising money for the Big Space Cancer Appeal, it’s a good cause.”
Mitchener has run the Cheltenham Half in “one hour, 38 minutes something” in the past and last year completed the London Marathon in three hours, 48 minutes, a time which understandably pleased him.
“I think I’m done with marathons,” he said. “But I still like running the 10K and I do parkrun every Saturday.”
And he still likes a half-marathon too. To support Mitchener in his charity run, visit https://www.justgiving.com/page/peter-mitchener-9Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
