Proud parents Neil and Diane Cann were at the Utilita Arena Birmingham on Sunday to see their son Jacob claim a top-four finish at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships.
The Western Tempo runner was competing in the 3,000 metres and he finished in a time of seven minutes, 54.35 seconds, which was fewer than three seconds behind race winner Thomas Keen.
The race has previously been won by superstars Seb Coe, twice, and Mo Farah, three times, and Neil Cann said of Jacob’s run: “He was happy, he had a great last lap.
“He does tend to start at the back but the he surges through with about three or four laps to go.
“He maybe could have finished third if he’d gone a bit sooner.”
Neil Cann, a former Cleeve School pupil, is a big supporter of Jacob’s running.
Both he and Diane – they live in Cheltenham – were in Portugal at the end of last year for the European Cross-Country Championships in the Algarve, the first time that Jacob was selected to run for Great Britain.
Last month he represented Great Britain in the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Florida.Copyright © 2026 The Local Answer Limited.
