Hygiene poverty is a growing issue in the UK, with more and more people struggling to afford basic washing products.

The Hygiene Bank is a national grassroots charity that works with individuals and families in crisis, in an effort to combat hygiene poverty.

The charity is led by volunteers and collects basic products, such as body wash, deodorant and toothpaste for those in their local communities who need it.

Jess Savery is a volunteer at the Cheltenham branch and explains why the work they do is so important.

She said: “Hygiene is often forgotten about when it comes to poverty.

“When people have to choose between food or being clean, they choose food. We want to help them give them their dignity back.”

Jess, who grew up in Stoke Orchard, started the Cheltenham branch of the bank after reading about the movement online.

She says that the idea of the bank is to collect hygiene products and then donate them to local charities, who are able to distribute them amongst their own networks to those who need them.

“We’re currently working with a homeless charity Cheltenham Open Door and a women’s refuge, The Nelson Trust, but there’s scope for expansion.

“As well as donations we’re always looking for more volunteers, and also local businesses that are able to become donation and collection points.”
