All work and no play...

We all constantly strive to be more, to do better, to achieve ever higher. As a result, more and more of us get burned out and frazzled – in fact, statistics show the highest rates of anxiety and depression within working families and, more worryingly, in our children.

So what can we do to relieve some of the pressure? Play more!

Play is fundamental for children and adults

Not only is play a fundamental need to our growing children – allowing them to practise the skills they will need in daily life – but for adults too, play can offer respite from the pressures of the modern world.

For some playtime is a sport – they practise and compete, but still find themselves being judgemental and consequently trying to better themselves.

For others it is creativity like drawing or painting; both brilliant forms of play, which allow us to explore our surroundings with fresh eyes and can aid relaxation and a sense of wellbeing.

But there is another way to play and that is through theatre and performance – which is why they call it ‘Putting on a Play’. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, diving into the dramatic arts can offer you a place to explore character, voice, movement and expression.

You work in a group and observe the rules of ‘Have Fun’, ‘Fail Happy’ and ‘Be Encouraging’. And in play you find strengths and talents you never knew you had!

Maybe you want to try something new, a new career or hobby, but perhaps you don’t feel ready to take the plunge. I know a lady called Danielle who is a budding interior designer, but is held back by a fear of not being good enough. We talked about her offering to ‘play’ with a friend who is redecorating her house – by approaching the task as play, and experimenting with budget, style, purchasing, up-cycling and being creative, they will create a home to be proud of and allow Danielle to practise her craft.

Enjoy the process

Imagine if we approached all new tasks in this way? Rather than expecting ourselves to be ‘good’ or judging ourselves as not ‘good enough’ we could simply play at it and enjoy the process until we find our sweet spot.

How many times have you looked back at your childhood; your likes and dislikes, hobbies and passions, to help you decide your next move? How many careers are based on a childhood ambition or dream? And how many of us are only now daring to bring those dreams to life?

I urge all families to find ways to laugh together and share what truly lights them up, no matter how silly, because within the silliness and the light-heartedness of life, we will find real treasure and, just possibly, our true selves.

So what are you going to play today?
