Gloucester City Winget Cricket Club want Gloucestershire to play T20 at Spa ground

Phil Jordan, the chairman of Gloucester City Winget Cricket Club, is a man on a mission.

He wants county cricket to return to the city and believes his club’s Spa ground would be the perfect venue.

He can already count on the support of Gloucester MP Richard Graham, who just happens to be a second team player at the club and who Jordan says is “quite good”.

“I’d love to see Gloucestershire playing T20 at the Spa,” said Jordan. “Why not? It wasn’t so long ago we had T20 at Archdeacon Meadow.

“We hosted a World XI game last season and the city council gave us permission to use Gloucester Park as a car park so that was a big step forward.

“The standard of the pitches will be the big issue but realistically it could happen within three years.

“We need the support of local people and businesses to make it happen.”

GCW will play in the Glos/Wilts Division of the West of England Premier League and are one year into a five-year play to get back into Premier One, which is one level above.

The five-year plan includes provision for improving the youth system, concentrating on the ground and getting as high up the league system as possible.

The club finished mid-table in Glos/Wilts last season and will be looking to improve under the captaincy of Scott Montgomery, who bats four and keeps wicket.

They will also be looking to new-ball bowlers Alex Nel and Craig Collinson to get into their stride early on and help the club make a fast start to the season.

However, it is not just the first team that will be the focus of the club’s attention.

“We’re trying to close the gap between the standard of the first team and the second team,” said Jordan. “At the moment it is too big. The aim is for the 2nd XI to win promotion to the County League Division One. They’ve won two successive promotions but they’ve got to keep it up.”

The club also runs two teams in the T20 Bash at under-19 and under-16 age groups. “It’s great fun,” said Jordan, who is also proud of the club’s involvement in All Stars Cricket.

“We have flashing bails and the players wear coloured clothing. We try to play the matches on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon and each batsman walks out to the sound of his chosen music.”

Jordan, 53, still finds time to play despite doing some coaching and looking after the Spa ground.

He captains the 3rd XI and said: “I’m an all-rounder but my bowling is a bit slower than it was 20 years ago. I’m more slow medium pace now. But I’m a left-armer so I’ve got a good angle for attack.”
